Multifarious Multifunction: Canon Pixma MP980
The Canon Pixma MP980 Colour Inkjet Multifunction All in One Printer sits at the top end of the home printer market, offering terrific PC-free copying, scanning and uploading, an uncommonly usable interface and a large LCD screen. This inkjet printer’s speed is better than most of its competitors and its print quality, while not market-topping, is certainly of superior quality. Especially impressive is this printer’s:
- Utility changing between paper sizes and type, scanning, copying and imputing images from USB and memory cards
- Terrific photo output, which is quick and easy
However, at nearly $450 Australian, the Pixma MP980’s powerful multifunction capabilities do not come cheap, and its elevated price raises the question of why it doesn’t do certain things better. For instance:
- This canon inkjet printer’s wireless capabilities are not particularly impressive and very finicky to set up
- It weighs more than 10 kilos, making it a snazzy but notably non-portable desktop unit
Canon Pixma MP980 Printing
Quick and sharp on photo printing, with excellent PC-free uploading and scanning, the Pixma MP980 certainly fulfils its amateur shutterbug capacities; however, on text printing it is surprisingly sluggish. Similarly, although photo quality is relatively high – especially for black and white photos, for which there is a dedicated grey inkwell – this Canon’s text pages resemble those of a much less expensive inkjet printer.

At just under $450 Australia, the Pixma MP980 is a particularly expensive home printer, although it does offer many mitigating features.
